The Scream franchise is the brainchild of the now-deceased horror legend Wes Craven. The franchise is credited with reinvigorating the slasher genre and creating a universe where other horror films are not only acknowledged but frequently referenced. Since the first film in 1996, there have been 5 different Scream movies with Scream 6 currently in the production process. The Quarry is currently in production by Supermassive Games and serves as a “spiritual successor” to their 2015 title Until Dawn.

In a recent interview with ComicBook, David Arquette stated that he believes that the Scream franchise is a perfect foundation for a game with an Until Dawn type of gameplay where the player interacts with and influences the story through decisions made in-game and through real-time events. The wide range of stars and celebrities within the Scream franchise has the potential to become in-game characters with little effort on the developer’s part. The iconic villain of the Scream franchise Ghostface already appears across the gaming world in popular titles, such as Among Us and Dead By Daylight, and also has a cosmetic skin in Call of Duty: Warzone.
Currently, there are no plans from Supermassive Games to create a game directly from, or even inspired by the Scream universe. David Arquette only mentions his viewpoint of how he believes the popular franchise can fit into the world of video games, especially this particular style, from this specific developer.
Using Video Games as the basis for Films and Television, as well as the vice versa, of using Films and Television as a basis for video games isn’t a new concept. Massive titles in the gaming world have been adapted by streaming services in the past few years; The Witcher, Castlevania, and The Cuphead Show (all Netflix) have seen successes with critics and audiences alike. With the Scream franchise back in the stoplight, it isn’t out of the realm of possibility that it could be used as a basis for a video game.
However, it’s important to note that the structures and audiences of each are wildly different. Not all fans of beloved film franchises like Scream consider themselves gamers or would even care that there is going to be a video game based off of it. It’s fair to think that it may be easier for a video game to be turned into an incredible TV Show or Film rather than the other way around.
Until Dawn is currently available for Playstation 4 and PC.
The Quarry will be releasing on June 10, 2022 for the Playstation 4, Playstation 5, PC, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
