IWBF announced that the 2014 IWBF Men’s World Championship will be held in Incheon, South Korea from July 1 to 12, 2014 and while the 2014 IWBF Women’s World Championship will run from June 19 to 29 in Toronto, Canada.
IWBF noted the expansion of participating teams with the men’s championship growing from 12 to 16 countries and the women’s championship from 10 to 12 in the 2014 IWBF Basketball Championships.
The host nation gets a berth and each of the four zones (IWBF Americas, IWBF Asia Pacific, IWBF Europe & IWBF Africa) gets one spot with the others awarded based on finishes in the previous Paralympic Games, the top 11 for the men and top 7 for the women.
Europe will have seven teams in the men’s Championship and four for the women’s championship.
The Americas will have four men’s and five women’s teams with the women’s automatic spot from Africa, which did not have a representative, being re-allocated to the Americas.
Africa will have 1 men’s team in Korea. Asia-Oceania will have four men’s and three women’s teams in world championships.
The regional qualifications for the world championship will start soon. IWBF Americas will began qualification this week in Guatemala (women) and Colombia (men).
