A great example is the Dreaming General, a grotesque flora-infused corpse that is capable of completely immobilizing a party and striking them down with powerful attacks. It’s a mechanic-based fight (similar to the other bosses found in Darkest Dungeon 2) but more than manageable for a mentally-prepared player.

Where Is The Dreaming General Located?

The Dreaming General can only be found in The Tangle, in a specialized Lair called The General’s Keep. Players unfamiliar with this area should get a feel for the enemies sprinkled throughout the zone before taking the fight to the boss itself.

Foes in The Tangle are “organized,” featuring staunch health pools and the ability to buff one another through Drummer units. These units can change the tide of battle in an instance, creating marching orders that will cause enemies to gain speed, defense, or attack buffs. The Tangle can be rough for first-time players and, unfortunately, gamers will need to battle through two fights worth of enemies within The General’s Keep before taking on the big man himself.

Like any other Lair, players should be stocked up heavily on potions and trinkets that boost damage as many of the enemies in this area feature higher HP and come equipped with defense-boosting abilities.

What Can The Dreaming General Boss Do?

The Dreaming General is imposing in his own rights but his mechanic can quickly dominate an un-prepared player, regardless of their team. Gamers heading into this fight will likely widen their eyes when met with the boss’ impressive 205 HP but that’s not what makes him such a difficult foe to fight. The real issue that will plague even the toughest teams is the Tap Root, a large entity behind the boss’ main form that acts as the puppet master in this twisted situation.

Although the Dreaming General himself is capable of dishing out some pretty hefty damage, players that are prepared to heal themselves and block incoming attacks should be fine. The real mechanic lies with the Tap Root itself, a creature capable of winding itself around a character and completely immobilizing them. Each time it “attacks,” the Tap Root will send two roots down at random characters. If a character manages to reach “three stacks of roots” they will find themselves completely entombed, unable to attack or move.

Gamers that don’t manage this mechanic will find their entire team completely encapsulated. Worse off, when an entire party is laden with three stacks of roots each, the Dreaming General himself will unleash a powerful and punishing attack that targets everyone. Thankfully, players can avoid becoming entrapped in the roots by attacking the Tap Root itself, which will cause the roots to recoil a bit.

Tips To Defeat The Dreaming General Boss

The key to this battle is “time management” in a sense, making sure players are constantly keeping pressure on the Tap Root and timing their attacks to ensure that they don’t become entombed completely by the creeping vines. Here are some other tips to help players down this mighty boss:

One of the best strategies is to hit the Tap Root twice during each turn, this will ensure that characters are never in danger of the creeping vines that are constantly encroaching towards them. It may cause the fight with the big man himself to take a bit longer to complete but it’s a much safer strategy. Bringing a frontline character with access to Taunt can make this fight a bit easier to manage as it will mitigate the Dreaming General’s attacks, allowing players to spend less time healing and more time whittling down his health. Blights and Burns work well on this boss and are recommended to help take down its massive health bar faster. Trinkets that provide extra damage, specifically melee, can make this fight a bit faster. Dreaming General has a large health pool so it can take a while for “weaker” teams to bring him down. Characters with range can help keep the Tap Root from spiraling out of control as melee characters will be incapable of hitting it. Thankfully, most characters have at least one ranged option. It’s always a good practice to bring Paracelsus for boss fights, as their ability to heal to provide stress resistance (via an upgraded Ounce of Prevention) is unparalleled. Players should stock up on healing items and bring characters that are capable of self-healing as the Dreaming General fight can drag on thanks to his immense HP. The Dreaming General is a long fight for most but some find it to be the easiest boss to defeat once players understand the mechanics. Focusing the vines should always be a priority but players shouldn’t have to worry about a barrage of annoying status effects.
