Elden Ring is the most recent entry in FromSoftware’s critically acclaimed library, and it perhaps adds the most ambitious features to the franchise yet. Elden Ring boasts a fully open-world, a mount to explore that world, and intricately designed lore partly created by fantasy author George R.R. Martin. Given the extreme success of Elden Ring, it seems that FromSoftware might try and replicate some of the game’s mechanics for its future titles. It’s not just the game’s developer that might want to use its features, though, and even modders are looking to Elden Ring for inspiration.

The creators of the Nightfall mod for Dark Souls have recently revealed that they are going to be expanding the fan-made sequel in order to incorporate more of Elden Ring’s mechanics. Namely, Nightfall’s boss fights are being reworked to emulate the newer game. “Game design has come a long way in 11 years,” said the creators when speaking about how they would bring in features such as animationary targeting, event scripting, and other techniques that give each boss fight a bit more personality.
Alongside upping the ante with its boss fights, Dark Souls’ Nightfall mod is also building on its core mechanics, with the developers critiquing their own previous work, discussing “clunky animation transitions and linear questlines.” The team working on Dark Souls Nightfall also talked about the demo for the expansive mod which released in January, stating that the “mod will be better off” for all the changes pointed out to them through fan feedback.
Elden Ring’s boss design is by no means perfect, and some fans do take issue with the power spike that comes in the later game, specifically with the level of difficulty enemies like the Fire Giant and Malenia can provide. However, through this difficulty, Elden Ring players find some of their favorite bosses. While FromSoftware’s challenges can prove to be infuriating for some time, the eventual celebration that comes with beating Malenia after hundreds of attempts can make the suffering seem worth it.
Dark Souls: Nightfall is in development. Dark Souls Remastered is available now on PC, PS4, Switch, and Xbox One.
