Top Gun: Maverick was a bona fide hit in 2022. It was one of the biggest box office hits of 2022. While it took 36 years for the sequel to Top Gun to hit theaters, a sequel to Top Gun: Maverick likely won’t take quite as much time if it’s greenlit. And given its overall gross, a sequel isn’t out of the question.

During the Golden Globes, Variety asked Ramirez when the Top Gun: Maverick sequel would begin shooting. “I’m gonna start training for it yesterday,” Ramirez responded. “Yeah, I’m already. I’m trying to get even more shredded than the first one. ‘Cause, you know, the competition gets elevated every time. […] There’s a lot of abs to be gained. Let’s just say that, you know?”

The Top Gun series is famous for its fanservice. In response to the film’s success, Paramount even released a three-hour version of the Top Gun: Maverick beach scene. That scene featured plenty of topless men, each of whom was in good shape. Ramirez is likely anticipating a repeat of this kind of fanservice.

Top Gun: Maverick was only brought down by Avatar 2 and its titanic success. The Tom Cruise film was nearly unstoppable during its theatrical run and made a killing for Paramount. That means a sequel is almost certain if there’s a story for it. Of course, the studio may choose not to make a sequel for whatever reason, but in today’s cinematic landscape, sequels are never far behind successful films.

When the original Top Gun came out, it was also a huge success, but sequels weren’t necessarily on the minds of most executives. That’s probably why Maverick took so long to make. It’s a different world now, though, and Top Gun: Maverick is breaking streaming records on Paramount Plus, another new factor that plays heavily into the potential for a sequel.
