The last addition to the military-themed shooter series that started them all earned generally middling reviews, and was quickly forgotten in the wake of Call of Duty: Black Ops. Nevertheless, the game performed well enough at retail, with Goodrich claiming that over 5 million copies were sold. With any luck, the game may have laid the groundwork for an even more successful future.
News of the forthcoming game broke in a blog post titled “In Case You Were Wondering…” on the official Medal of Honor website. After thanking fans, Goodrich took a moment to subtly acknowledge some of the shortcomings of the previous game:
He then went on to respectfully acknowledge the support Medal of Honor has received from the military community:
Beyond confirming the existence of the game, and a suggesting that fans “check back often to the website and the fan page on Facebook,” Goodrich had no further information to offer.
Electronic Arts has made no secret of its intention to rule the FPS roost. While admitting that the last Medal of Honor didn’t meet quality expectations, the company has recently been bold enough to claim that Battlefield 3 will be the “best product in the industry,” and have further teased an as-yet-unannounced exciting new FPS. Where exactly a new Medal of Honor fits in those plans is not entirely clear, nor is the timeframe of the game’s release.
With Modern Warfare 3 apparently suffering a troubled development cycle, requiring that Raven and Sledgehammer be brought in to help, the time may be finally be right for Electronic Arts. Danger Close is still a relatively new studio, and its best work may be yet to come. For now, we’ll just have to wait until more news on the forthcoming game is revealed.
