In fact, the story of Danganronpa is so broad and complicated that it also received two anime adaptations that aired back-to-back. Just like the games, the narrative of these adaptations is also great and adds quite a bit to the overarching story of the series. Of course, not everyone would watch these anime adaptations, but missing out on them means that the following things about Danganronpa will remain alien for the longest time to these abstainers.

7 The Exact Manner In Which Class 77-B Was Brainwashed Is Shown

Danganronpa 2: Goodbye Despair is an excellent sequel with a massive twist that basically reveals that each and every participant in this killing game was actually part of the Ultimate Despair — a terrorist group that was committing atrocious acts all over the world. This was rather hard to believe, given that most of the characters in the game seemed to have a moral compass that would generally stop them from committing such atrocious acts.

However, this act was also explained by the fact that the members of Class 77-B were actually brainwashed by Junko in the most horrid manner possible. The class was forced into watching a hypnotic live stream of their classmate slowly dying as the embers of hope burnt out and were replaced with the unrelenting darkness of despair.

6 The Homeroom Teacher Of This Class Was Lobotimized By Junko And Mukuro

For the longest time, Class 77-B was fragmented and mostly focused on their own thing. However, this changed with the advent of Chiaki and their homeroom teacher, Chisa Yukizome, who helped the class bond with each other and become steadfast friends in the process.

However, it seems that the happiest figures in Danganronpa are bound to meet the most tragic fate. As a result, Chisa was captured by Junko and lobotomized by Mukuro so that she could be brainwashed into loving despair. It’s a hard scene to watch in the anime and makes the downward spiral of Class 77-B even more tragic.

5 Blood Is Red For The First Time In The Series

While the Despair Arc of the Danganronpa 3 anime keeps the blood color pink, that’s not the case in the Future Arc. In this particular half of the anime, the lack of having to adhere to ratings and restrictions meant that blood could finally be depicted in its natural color for the first time in the series.

In fact, Danganronpa 3: The End of Hope’s Peak High School pulls no punches when it comes to showing just how brutal its world really is. The anime features some of the goriest murders and executions ever seen in the series, some of which are extremely hard to digest at times.

4 Another Killing Game Happens In The Future Foundation Headquarters

The Future Foundation is a group of individuals who strive to bring hope back into the world after despair has taken over in the most destructive manner possible. However, this group doesn’t hold a candle to the power of the organization of despair, and this fact is revealed early on in the anime,

The Future Foundation Headquarters becomes the stage for what is stated to be the final killing game by Monokuma himself. The twist in this game is that every member of the game is forced into a deep sleep except for the potential murderer, who can choose to either kill another member of the game or abstain from killing. The latter action ends the game… but things are rarely this simple in Danganronpa.

To make matters worse, there’s an action that players of the game are prevented from carrying out. Failing to carry out this order will lead to said person being poisoned.

3 Kazuo Tengan, The Founder Of The Future Foundation, Orchestrated This Killing Game

Kazuo Tengan was the former director of Hope’s Peak Academy who also founded and served as the chairman of the Future Foundation. While most people considered him to be a champion of hope, later episodes reveal that his character wasn’t exactly the most morally sound person around.

For starters, Tengan was the person who decided on the final killing game from the get-go! His logic was that pushing everyone too far would compel Ryota, the Ultimate Animator, to broadcast a video all over the world that would brainwash people into accepting hope. However, as seen in the series, forcing people to believe a particular train of thought rarely has the intended result.

2 Kyoko Almost Dies In The Series

Kyoko is one of the most beloved characters who appeared in the very first Danganronpa title. Her character went through her fair share of ups and downs but ultimately managed to survive this unholy killing game as she stood side-by-side with Makoto and the rest of the survivors.

However, Kyoko ends up breaking a cruel rule during the Final Killing Game which entailed that she would die if she survived with Makoto up till the fourth killing round. She is poisoned and almost loses her life before a miraculous drug brings her back from the jaws of death by the end of the anime.

1 Makoto Becomes The New Headmaster Of Hope’s Peak Academy

After the events of the anime, it’s clear that things are far from ideal in the world of Danganronpa. However, for what it’s worth, the students of Hope’s Peak Academy finally have a new chance to fight back against the forces of despair once again.

The icing on the cake is when Kyoko comes back to Hope’s Peak Academy at the end of the series and refers to Makoto as a headmaster. It’s a great development that completely fits Makoto’s character.
