STARTING PITCHER RANKINGS
CALL TO THE ‘PEN
Pitching for the first time since July 8, Huston Street (groin) worked around a two-out walk to nail down his 25th save on Wednesday. He will continue to handle save chances for the Angels going forward, with Joe Smith serving as his “next-in-line.”
Jason Motte picked up his sixth save of the year in Game 2 of Wednesday’s doubleheader, but perhaps just as notable is how the Cubs used their other late-inning options. Pedro Strop entered the game in the fifth inning, tossing 1.2 scoreless innings. Rafael Soriano threw a scoreless seventh, and Hector Rondon threw a scoreless eighth. Rondon didn’t pitch particularly well, so his eighth-inning job is in jeopardy, but Motte seems relatively safe in the closer’s role for now.
Brad Boxberger entered Wednesday’s tied game in the bottom of the ninth, and after tossing a scoreless frame, he came back out for the bottom of the 10th with the game still tied. After allowing a leadoff single, Boxberger retired the next two batters, thanks in part to a sacrifice bunt that moved the runner to second. Boxberger then allowed a walkoff single. While it wasn’t a particularly good performance, it seems unlikely that Tampa manager Kevin Cash will hold it against Boxberger given the circumstances. Jake McGee once again worked the seventh inning, tossing a perfect frame.
Cleveland’s Cody Allen struggled for the third straight outing, allowing three hits and a run on Wednesday. He still managed to pick up the save, but this is the second time this season Allen has had a prolonged “slump.” His job is certainly safe for now, but Bryan Shaw is pitching well and would take over if anything happens to Allen.
Colorado’s John Axford got knocked around for the second straight game, allowing two hits, three walks and two runs. Axford is currently planted on the trade block, so this little cold streak obviously isn’t helping the Rockies move him. Either way, fantasy owners should keep tabs on the situation and consider picking up LaTroy Hawkins and Tommy Kahnle.
WEATHER WATCH
It should be a clear day around the league, as only the Royals-Cardinals has even a 20-percent chance of seeing rain.
